Comfy Espadrilles?

This summer (or even past summers) I've seen espadrilles at several shoe shops but I 've not seen many people wearing them. My husband said they looked like beggars' shoes (ugh!). I don't think most beggars have shoes anyway. I am contemplating getting a pair but will they be comfy?
